Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Now Powering Roller Coasters with Solar

In the expansive parking lot behind Six Flags Discovery Kingdom’s bright massive roller coasters, animal habitats, restaurants and thousands of kids running around in excitement, now sits a 7.5 megawatt solar carport system powering about 80 percent of it all.

Six Flags is not only the first theme park on the west coast to go solar, but it’s solar carport system is one of the largest in the country.

In partnership with sPower, the system owner, and Borrego, Six Flags made the official switch to solar power at a special event to kick off the park’s 12th annual Holiday in the Park, the first to be powered by renewable energy. Congressman Mike Thompson, who the industry calls the “grandfather of solar,” and Vallejo Mayor Bob Sampayan joined us to flipped the giant, ceremonial switch, officially flipping the park to solar energy, and turning on millions of twinkling lights to the delight of everyone in attendance.

In this video, we hear from Six Flags, sPower and Borrego CEO Mike Hall about the genesis of the project, its importance, what it means to them personally and the nuts and bolts that went into making it a success.
